No question about it, painting provides rocket fuel to our artistic endeavors!
Learning to Paint Takes PracticeIt takes practice to learn anything. Playing baseball and playing the piano take practice. Painting is the same, it takes practice, lots of practice.Probably the hardest thing about painting is just getting started. Once we have everything ready and we are actually painting, we get engrossed in the project. The joy of painting takes over and the cares of the world just fly away.
Tips for Daily PaintingWe want to paint as often as possible. What does it takes to start painting regularly?
Have a dedicated painting space where your painting supplies are readily available. You don't want to spend time everyday getting out and putting away your art things. It may be on the end of the kitchen counter, a walk-in closet, a corner of the family room, the basement or any other place in your home. You could even have a rolling cart with all your art supplies. You just roll it out to the kitchen table when you want to paint. There are all kinds of options. Makes sure to keep a good supply of your painting materials. There is nothing more disappointing than running out of your favorite color in the middle of a painting. Paint small, if you want to complete a painting each day. Daily painting can easily be done on any size from 3"x3" up to 6"x8'. It just depends how much time you have. Larger paintings take more days to complete. That's okay too, just make a habit of painting daily. Before you know it, the painting will be finished. Keep a supply of things to paint. You may have objects in your house that will make a good subject. Paint anything from plants, dishes, food, pets and furniture, anything that looks interesting. You may want to start a file of photographs and pictures to use as reference material for your paintings.
How Long Will You Paint?Daily painters may spend anywhere from 20 minutes up the several hours. It all depends on your individual time constraints.The most important thing is to make it a regular habit. Set yourself a certain time to start painting each day. Then stick to it. I'm talking to myself, as well as you. It may be 20 or 30 minutes in the morning before work. That's an inspiring way to start the day. It could be 30 or 60 minutes after dinner. Whatever time you set for yourself, keep the appointment.
Don't Be Hard On YourselfWe need to give ourselves some breathing room.Many of us are our own worst critic, especially artists. So a painting didn't turn out the way you expected, you have options. Paint over it with some white paint, let it dry and use it for another painting. You could throw it away or you can save it. Farther down the road, look back at your earlier paintings and see how far you have progressed. Every painting is not perfect. That's okay, with painting daily we improve every day.
